Tea has inexorably been linked to the British, since its introduction there in the mid-17th century from Holland. In Britain, tea became known as a health drink and was claimed to have many recuperative powers. Afternoon tea was the invention of Anna, the wife of the seventh Duke of Bedford. It was started in order to stop a sinking feeling in the afternoon between the traditional two meals of breakfast and dinner in the evening.
